Obituary

On December 3, 1963, Mr. James Pittes, II and his beautiful wife, Alma Pittes welcomed into the world a handsome son, James Pittes III. He was lovingly known by everyone as “Sonny”. He was third of four children born to this union.

Spending his formative years in Tulsa, Sonny attended schools in the North Tulsa area, Wiley Post Elementary, Thomas Gilcrease Jr. High and Tulsa Central High School graduating in the Class of 1982. After completing high school, he attended Tulsa University.

Growing up in the church, Sonny worshipped at Galilee Baptist Church under the direction of Pastor Potter.  Although he never joined Full Gospel Outreach Ministries, he had a good relationship with Bishop Jones and the Jones family and an even better relationship with God.

Sonny had an eye for everything beautiful, he knew interior design and decorating was his strong suit, so he made his hobby his business. He opened Tulsa Flowers and Gifts. Sonny’s flowers were like a canvas. He experimented with color, greenery, often imported flowers, his creative flair and love for flowers to transform the everyday arrangements and floral sprays into that extra special floral expression. You could decipher his work from against any other. He was in a class all by himself. Sonny’s signature floral designs graced hundreds of home going services, houses and offices. Sonny’s creativity, generosity and his energy were just incredible. He was definitely a big part of the community. He loved what he did for a living. He loved all things beautiful.

Having quick wit and a sharp tongue, Sonny could say things that would leave you thinking; “Did he just say that?”  He could quickly get you right in line with a simple, “This ain’t what you want” or a “Don’t go there”.  No matter what the saying was, you knew he meant business and there were no games to be played. However, no matter how quick his wit or his mouth, you would never find a more loving brother than Sonny. Sonny and Sharon were inseparable.  If you saw one, you would see the other.

Sonny has always had a passion for interior and floral designs but his love for fine cars and fashion started early in life from Corvettes, Mercedes and BMW’s. He loved his cars.

From an early age Sonny enjoyed horse back riding. He loved to ride with his mother, Alma and other family members .

Meeting him at the gates of heaven will be his parents, Alma Pittes and James Pittes II; paternal grandparents, James Pittes and Mary Boyd; maternal grandparents, Alma Bowens and Loma O. Mason; aunts, Willie Marie Payne and Teresa Bowens and uncle, Charles Mason.

Remembering Sonny’s bright light will be his loving siblings, sisters, Cathy Ann Pittes and Sharon Denise Pittes and brother, Gary (Lawanda) Pittes; his aunts, Jacqueline Scott, Eloise (Gregory) Vickers and Judy Green; uncles, Jack (Joylette) Boyd, Albert Bowens and Edward Boyd; nieces, Markita Pittes and  NaCretia Pittes; nephews, Terrell Pittes, Brandon Pittes and Braylan Pittes; great-nieces, Kamryn Harris, Aryanna Pittes and Lena Pittes; great-nephews, Triston and Trenton Pittes. And a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation for Sonny will be held on Friday, March 4, 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., at Butler-Stumpff & Dyer Funeral Home, 2103 E. 3rd St., Tulsa, OK 74104.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 5, 1:00 p.m., at Full Gospel Family Outreach Ministries.
