Obituary

“On Tuesday evening Mother Nora Lene Sumbry of Tulsa, Oklahoma was beckoned by the master to come and receive her crown.” Funeral services will be Saturday October 13, 2018 12:00 noon in Greater Mt. Carmel Baptist Church 1624 East Virgin St. Tulsa, Oklahoma 74106 with Rev. Ryon Williams.

On October 9, 2018, Nora Lene Sumbry received the call to come up yonder. Quietly she surrender to be with her Savior.

Nora Lene was born into this life on April 2, 1937, the fifth daughter born to the Clarence and Elnora Cherry in Wolfe City, Texas. She later gained another sister, Pat.

In 1943, the family relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma where she attended Dunbar Elementary, Carver Junior High School and Booker T. Washington High School graduating with the Class of 1955. She then attended St. John’s Nursing School studying to be a Registered Nurse. After completion of school Nora found gainful employment as a lead nurse at St. John’s Hospital, Doctor’s Hospital, Black’s Nursing Home and lastly, Rest Haven Nursing Home. Nora labored until her health forced her to retire in the mid 1970’s. She also received her certification as a neonatal nurse at Tulsa Technology Center.

Nora loved to read and buy books. She often offered family members and friends books to help their wellbeing and wellness. With the heart of a nurse, she was always offering advice on how you should live and be in better health.

Nora was a classy, compassionate and caring person a devoted mother and grandmother she later was able to be a blessing to her family by babysitting her great-grandchildren until she was seventy-nine years old. She enjoyed working diligently with her hands as she created arts and crafts and scrapbooking art.

She was baptized at an early age. After moving to Tulsa she became a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. She later revisited her faith and attended Kingdom Life Tabernacle Church of Tulsa until her health declined.

She met the love of her life Wilbert C. Sumbry and they were joined in Holy matrimony to this this union four children were born, Willette, Lenora, Mingo and Clydia.

Nora was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Elnora Cherry, three sisters, Thelma Cherry, Johnnie Reed, Eunice Joseph and granddaughter, Kenette.

She leaves to cherish memory and continue her legacy, children, Willette DeShields of Tulsa, OK, Lenora (Victor) Deinwiddie of Haskell, OK, Mingo (Myra) Sumbry of Atlanta, GA and Clydia Brown of Tulsa, OK; grandsons, Richard, Ryon and Roland Williams, Wayne DeShields, Keon Sumbry and Jason Brown all of Tulsa, OK; great-grandchildren, Paris, Ryon, Skye, Jordon, Mya, Aziza, Rowen and Kazemde; her siblings, Delores George of Los Angeles, CA and Letitea “Pat” (Harry) Jefferson of Tulsa, OK along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.

Burial will follow in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Skiatook, Oklahoma. Visitation will be Friday October 12, 2018 3:00pm til 8:00pm at Butler-Stumpff & Dyer Memorial Chapel 2103 East 3rd Street Tulsa, Oklahoma 74104.

  2. Willette, Lenore, Mingo, Claudia & Wayne & The Entire Family, Our Thoughts & Prayers Go Out To You During The Loss Of Your Mother, Me-Ma, Sister, Aunt & Cousin . I Have Many Fond Memories From The 1St Time I Met Her As A 3Rd Grader & Growing Up In Our Diverse Neighborhood. Seeing Her In Her White Dress, Hat & Stockings As An Rn Was Encouraging. She Was A Wealth Of Knowledge & Loved To Talk. May For The Peace Of God Engulf You & Strengthen You All. However, We Do Not Grieve Without Hope For Though Our Earthly Tabernacle Be Destroyed, We Have A Building Not Made With Hands. We Have This Blessed Hope That When The Trump Of God Sounds The Dead In Christ Will Rise 1St & We Who Remain Shall Be Caught Up With Them To Meet Him…Jesus In The Air. We Are Your Extended Family, We Love You All. Mrs. Sumbrey We’Ll See You Again
