Obituary
Larry Burnett, Sr. was born on August 8, 1951, to Mr. Walter F. Burnett and Mrs. Myrle Burnett. He was the youngest of 5 children – Mildred Rayford (deceased), Walter Burnett, Jr. (deceased), Andrea Brown, and Beverly Howard, who live on the cherish his memories.
When he was a toddler, his father remarried a wonderful woman, Evelyn Burnett, and Larry was blessed with a bonus mother who he loved him like her own. Larry attended Tulsa Public Schools and graduated from McClain Senior High School in 1969. He started to pursue his bachelor’s degree at OSU when he was expelled for a short time after organizing a protest in the dean’s office behind the war.
Larry then decided to wanted to enlist in the Army in 1971 where he was a tank commander/NCO until 1974. Larry then decided to return to OSU and continue with his bachelors degree and also became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
It was at OSU where Larry met the mother of his children, Verna Hawkins. They married and had 3 beautiful children: Larry Burnett, Jr., Whitney Burnett, and Cortlandt Burnett, who live on to cherish his memories.
He started his career with Southwestern Bell and stayed with for 13 years.
Larry’s mother became ill so he moved to California for a short while. White in California, he stayed with his brother, Walter Burnett, Jr. and sisters, Andrea Brown and Beverley Howard. He started working for the hospital with his brother in the dietary department.
After his mother’s passing, he remained in Sacramento with his son, Larry Burnett, Jr. He eventually moved in with his sister, Beverly Howard in El Sobrate, CA and then to Elk Grove where he was close to both of his sisters. Larry’s father became ill and he returned to Oklahoma to take care of him after the passing of “Sang” Evelyn Burnett.
After his father passed, he reconnected with his childhood friend, Doris Davis, who became the love of his life and he adored her 2 girls, Eboni and Netra.
Larry Burnett was a man of God and was a Deacon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He also loved his garden and in his retirement he tended to his grass and flowers. He got himself a fish tank and those were his babies. Larry loved his television shows MASH, Andy Griffith, and his sports.
Larry developed lung cancer in August of 2018 and he fought a long hard battle and our super soldier gained his wings on May 22, 2024.
God allowed us to borrow him for 72 years and in that time he made many friends who became family. He was loved and he will be missed!!
