Obituary

With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the beautiful life of “Pokey” Joyce Marie Barker-Brown. Born January 29, 1961, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma

Joyce was the oldest of seven children and was a source of strength, wisdom, and love to her family throughout her life. She graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1979 and later earned a degree in bookkeeping, accounting, and business, demonstrating her dedication to education and personal growth.

In 1987 Pokey relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma, with her four beloved children, where she built a life centered on faith, family, and servitude. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandma, and great grandma.

Her family was her greatest earthly treasure, and she found joy in gathering them together, preparing delicious meals, and creating memories that will be cherished forever in Pokie’s kitchen

In 2005, Joyce re-dedicated her life back to Christ and became a faithful member of Harvest Time Outreach, where she later became a deaconess under Bishop, serving wholeheartedly as deaconess and kitchen server with humility and excellence.

Joyce had a special gift for people; she faithfully sent uplifting messages filled with scripture, prayers, and words of hope to family, friends, and anyone who was in need. Her thoughtful messages became a ministry that reminded countless people of God’s promises, his love, and his faithfulness.

She is survived by her husband, Freddie Brown Junior, her children: Lakeisha Wallace, Donnell Barker, Latresha Banks (Danena), and Brandon Barker; bonus child, Kisha Brown; grandkids: Branae Barker, Omar Barker, Benjamin Tottress, Simya Barker, Genesis, Heavenly, and Dallas Wallace, Harmony Brown, and Dalemar Brown; great granddaughter, Ja’Miyah Walters; siblings: Vicky Walter, Anita Barker, Sharon (Michael) Moore, and David (Paula) Barker; half siblings: Tammy (Eophus) Graves, Buffy (Peco) Daniels, Steve Daniels, Rushell Mayberry, Symohani Prince, Anita (Brian) Stallings, Maurice Smith, Nicole Smith, and Nicole Mayberry; her best friends: Wilma Pheifer and Natalie McDaniels; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives, and friends.

Joyce was preceded in death by her grandparents: Hattie Barker, James Jackson, and Otis Sheppard; mother, Druetta Daniels; father, Theopolis Mayberry; brothers: Adam Barker and Frank Lewis, Jr.; uncle, Hubert Stafford; son-in-law, Teddy Wallace; and bonus son, Freddie Brown III.

Although her absence leaves an immeasurable void, her legacy of faith, love, compassion, and service continues to live on through her family, her church, and every life she touches. We rejoice in knowing that she has heard the words she faithfully lived for:

“Psalm 23:1-4 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
