Joe Lewis attended elementary school at Dunbar and Junior High School at St. Monica Catholic.
Joe Lewis enlisted into the United States Army in 1956 and served as a Marksman. Joe Lewis received an honorable discharge in 1958.
Joe Lewis met and fell in love with Willie Mae Woods and to that union, a beautiful baby girl was born, and they named her Bonnie Woods.
Joe Lewis married Nellie for 28 years until her passing in 1994. Together, they worked as apartment managers in California and Las Vegas, and they enjoyed traveling in their Winnebago and spending time with family.
Joe Lewis was a kind and loving man with a passion for fishing, dancing, dominoes, outdoor sports, family gatherings, and poker. His pictures are still on the wall at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, NV. He also enjoyed fixing things and earned the name “MacGyver/Mr.-Fix-it.”
His death saddens us, but we take comfort in knowing that Joe Lewis is now with his parents, Ross, and Frankie McKinney, his three sisters, Ruby Dee Jones, Mary L. Williams, and Roberta Mitchell, and his three brothers, Edward McKinney, Ross L. McKinney Jr., and Tilford J. McKinney Sr.; and bonus daughter Michelle Spearman.
Joe Lewis leaves to cherish in his memories: two daughters Bonnie (Kenneth) Chappell, of Tulsa OK, and Rosalyn Jackson of CA; two brothers, Larry McKinney Sr., and Frank McKinney Sr., all of Tulsa OK; granddaughters, LaCresha, and Nicole, bonus granddaughter Rosie all of Tulsa; Nickie, Miesha, Tanisha, and Denise of CA; 27great-grandchildren and a host of great-great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his only living aunt, Erma Thompson Sr. of CA.
