Obituary

Greg’s “time to be born” was November 5, 1957 to Thadora and James Watkins in Tulsa, OK, but he was raised by his grandparents, Clara and Thado Speights. His Mom and Father both passed at young ages. He so adored his grandparents and respected them for raising him, but he had a very special relationship with his grandmother (whom he called Momma) and his Aunt LeeNora. They taught him all about the love of God and how important Jesus should be in his life; how that love could help him endure any trial or tribulation and celebrate HIS triumphs.

He attended Tulsa Public Schools: Dunbar Elementary, Carver Junior High, and Bell Junior High, and then onto Booker T. Washington High School.

Greg graduated from Booker T Washington High School in 1976. While at BTW, Greg was given a nickname, WatStaxx or Staxx. That name stayed with him the rest of his life! After graduating in 1976 from Booker T. Washington High School, he attended and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Marketing in 1980.

Greg held various occupations, but he worked doing what he loved, Loan Management. This allowed him to help, counsel, and guide others on loans and financing. He was last employed at Space Age Federal Credit Union servicing Spirit members. He loved his job and his members. A lot of them became personal friends.

Greg’s mother Thadora, father James, grandparents Thado and Clara Speights, a precious Aunt, LeeNora (Aunt Leet) Casey, brother, James C. Watkins Sr., sister, Mae Johnson, and a cousin, Deborah Casey preceded him in death.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife Diane, daughter, Tamika, son, Rickey (Velisha) Oats, grandsons, Dezric and Garland Oats, mother-in-law, Susie Price, sister, Shirley Barnett, brother, Ronnie (Lillie) Watkins, Great Uncle, Eddie Lee Speights (Chicago), a special nephew, Samson, God daughter, Mia Hancock, special friends Marvin Primas, Wayman Cruell, James McKinney, Jeff Listenbee, Essic Brown, Keith Jacobs, and Tyrone Knox, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

  1. STILL

Its hard to believe its been 5 years as of January 4th 2023. I’m still missing you, I still love you and I will always love you. I must say that It’s been tough without you. I also must admit that I have had a lot of dark days, but Emmanuel walks with me every day! I thank my God for the gift of “you” and that you are resting in Christ. Loving you always, your forever love and wife, Diane.

  2. One More Minute On January 4Th It Was The Happiest Day Of My Life. We Were Bride And Groom, Standing At The Altar. Both Of Us Shaking Like A Leaf In The Wind. Feeling Like We Were Both About To Pass Out In God’S Awesomeness. 11/23/1985 Was When It Began. Pastor Barbara Singing, Bone Of My Bone And Flesh Of My Flesh, And Sister Brenda Taylor Playing The Piano. We Had Just Confessed In Front Of Family And Friends (Witnesses), “Until Death Do Us Part”. That Day Came 1/4/2019. A Day I Will Never Forget! And I Can’T Help But Think, If I Had “One More Minute” With You. One More Minute January 4, 2019 Was The Last Time I Held You. January 3Rd Was The Last Time I Spoke With You. We Had Such A Great Time That Day. My Eyes Tear Up Thinking About The Parade Of Memories And I Smile Thinking About All The Laughter And Joy We Shared. I Would Do Anything Just To Have One More Minute. One More Minute …To Tell You How Much I Love You. …To See You Smile, With A Bright Glow In Your Eyes. …To Hear You Sing Loud And Wrinkly. …To Feel The Softness Of Your Kiss. …To Hear Your Voice That Was Always So Assuring. …To Hear You Pray Unashamedly And Boldly. …To Let You Hold You Me Tightly, And Never Let Go. …To Hear You Say Good Morning And Good Night. …To Hear You Say, It’S Going To Be Alright. …To Hear You Say, I Got You. Full Circle, Those Same Witnesses At The Wedding Were There At Your Homegoing. Pastor Barbara Over The Service And Now Prophetess Taylor Orchestrating Part Of The Homegoing Service. I’M Sitting There With A Very Broken Heart, But I Can Say There Were No Regrets In Our Marriage. Going Through The Motion That Day, But In Your Strength. Just Like You Had Shown Me So Many Times. Profoundly, God Has Reassured Me That “Love Is Forever” And His Love Is Forever. So, I’Ll Carry You With Me Always In My Heart. I Love You With My Every Being! Rest In Heaven And Keep Praying For Us. We Will See You Again One Day! Your Forever Wife, Diane

  3. Such A Beautiful Remembrance! Stay Blessed!

  4. Diane, Your Letter Was So Beautiful And So Sincere. Thank You For Being Such A Great Wife And Good Friend To My Lifelong Buddy. God Bless You And Keep You Safe!

  5. Hey Baby. Thinking About You Today And Always. Finally Got Enough Strength To Do This. You Were The Most Incredible Person And Husband That Anyone Could Pray For And Receive As A Gift From God. This Has Been The Toughest 16 Months I’Ve Had To Bear. I Know That You Thought I Was Tough But Not So Much When It Came To My Precious Husband. Without God I Would Have Folded. No Doubt! But Because Of God In His Immeasurable Power I Was Able To Write This. Yes It Took That Much. I Just Wanted To Say Today That I Miss You And I Will Always Love You. I Know You Are Concerned About Us But God Is Keeping Us. So For Now Rest And Abide Until We Meet Again. Love Your Forever Wife. Diane
