Visitation for Mr. Hunter will be held on Friday, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., at Butler-Stumpff & Dyer Funeral Home, 2103 E. 3rd St., Tulsa, OK 74104.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 11:00 a.m., at St. John AME Church, 1845 N. Peoria Ave., Tulsa, OK 74106

Remembering Freddy

Freddy Lee Hunter prayerfully and valiantly fought for the past four months, always positive and hopeful about his healing. He passed away peacefully on Friday evening, March 1, 2024 at the age of 76.

Freddy was born in McAlester, Oklahoma on February 6, 1948 to Henry Sr. and Juanita Hunter. He was the third oldest of five children. Freddy graduated from Toussaint L ’Overture High School in McAlester, Oklahoma with the class of 1966. After graduating, Freddy was drafted into the United States Air Force. He was deployed to serve during the Vietnam War on detail mission in the Philippines as a jet engine mechanic. After receiving an honorable discharge from the military, he attended Tulsa Community College and received an Associates Degree. Freddy went on to have a career with the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier and retired in 2003 after 32 years of service.

While Freddy served in the military, he became pen pals with the love of his life Pearl Hill. Freddy and Pearl were married on July 22, 1972. They eventually joined Greater St. John AME Church under the leadership of Pastor B.S. Roberts. Freddy was very active as he served as a treasurer of the Working Worriers, a Steward, a member of the Sons of Allen. He served faithfully until his health began to fail him.

Preceding Freddy in death are his parents, two sisters (Dorothy Prater and Shirley Hunter), and one brother (Henry Hunter Jr.). Left to cherish his memory are his wife Pearl, three sons Byron Hunter (Michelle) of Tulsa, OK, Carlos Hunter (Johniece) of Edmond, OK, Marcus Hunter (Abia) of Houston, TX, one brother Donald Hunter (Louisette) of Mitchellville, MD, one grandson Ethan, seven granddaughters Brittani, Heiress, Karli, Noelle, Candace, Whitney, and Brooklynn, three great-grandsons Dayton, Caden (Bear), and Titan, two great-granddaughters Cadience and Cam’Reigh, one sister-in-law Ora Swain (Frank), two brothers-in-law Levell Hill (Dana) and Leon Hill, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Freddy was affectionately known to his children and grandchildren as “Pops”. Pops loved them dearly and had a name for each of them. Freddy never met a stranger. He was a loving, friendly, and giving person. He loved and always looked forward to family gatherings. Freddy will be truly missed, and we look forward to seeing him again.
