Obituary

On May 7, 1948 in Little Rock, Arkansas a baby boy was born to Freddie (Coleman) and J. B. Patterson, Sr. He was the third child of four siblings. J.B. accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior and was committed to the Master’s service. His earthly journey to eternal rewards came on Thursday, October 10, 2019. J. B. loved the Lord and his walk and talk were in alignment. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations.”, JB had a mission field that encompassed all areas of his life. He had a heart which God loved, a voice through which God spoke and a hand that faithfully served his Lord Jesus Christ with loyalty to his family and devotion to his church family.

J.B. was educated in the public-school systems, graduating from Booker T. Washington High School in 1966 and remained a very loyal, dedicated alumni. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1967 to 1969 and upon discharge, went on to graduate from Northeastern State University, with a degree in Psychology and Journalism. J.B. was a lifetime brother of the “Kappa Alpha Psi” Fraternity. J.B. retired from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections after 28 years of service but remained a lifetime member of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice. He was a member of the NAACP, Inspection General for the Tulsa County Election Board, and a Licensed Certified Bail Bondsman in partnership with Big A Bail Bond Company. His greatest joy was serving as the Pastor of Timothy Baptist Church.

J.B. joined Timothy Baptist Church on May 13, 1983 under the late Rev. J.C. Gilkey, Sr. On May 17, 1989 he was honored to be selected as pastor of Timothy Baptist Church. He served faithfully and on August 11, 2019, celebrated his 30th anniversary as Pastor. Rev. Patterson served as Vice-Moderator under Rev. W. T. Lauderdale, Rev. Leon Davis, and Rev. Melvin Bailey, and later he was voted in as Moderator of the Canaan District Baptist Association. He loved reading and shared his knowledge as an assistant teacher and a teacher in the District Congress of Christian Education, teaching Black Baptist History and Baptist Doctrine.

The family loved J.B.’s attribute of modern-day philosopher, who “philosophized” whenever he was presenting his perspective on an issue. He would answer a question with a question. J.B. loved his family, family gatherings and was instrumental in establishing the Metcalf-Charles family reunions. He would tell the family, “save your dimes” for the

trips. J.B. was “spoiled rotten” by his beloved nieces: Doris, Freddie Lee, Ann, Rosiland, and DeVaughnda. Whatever Uncle wanted or desired from these ladies they were sure to provide.

J.B. and Billie met, fell in love, and were united in marriage on August 25, 1969. They were blessed with God’s abundant love to be a parent to children everywhere. Some children were fostered in their home, some in their family and especially the children of Timothy Baptist Church. J.B. enjoyed the richest of a special relationship with Timothy’s Chairman of the Deacon Board, Luther J. Jones and the other deacons of Timothy Baptist.

In life it’s truly a blessing beyond measure when you have one good friend but to have four great friends for 50 plus years is astonishing. J. B. was gifted with these individuals: Ocie Taylor, Jr., Mike Washington, Walter Armstrong, Jr., and Chester Brooks. Through life’s journey he acquired another friend, for another 25 plus years in the person of, Reverend Donald Brown, who became a co-laborer at the Department of Corrections and in the Ministry. J.B. and Don were conference traveling buddies and peers in reaping the harvest for the Lord.

J.B. was blessed with a large family who loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents (J.B. Patterson, Sr. and Freddie Coleman Patterson), mother-in-law, (Pearlie Morrison) brother and sister-in-law (O.D. and Thelma Davis) and sister (Claretta Stewart). Those remaining to mourn his passing and celebrate his homegoing, his wife of 50 years: Billie Jean, sister, Helen Valentine (Kansas City, MO), in-laws: Elaine Woodrow, Shirley Smith (Tulsa), Linda Billups (Houston, TX), Robert Meachem (Tulsa), Vickie Meachem (Tulsa), Virgil (Shyrolon) Wilson (Dallas, TX), Hattie (Terry) Johnson (Tulsa), and Cortez Scott. Four aunts and an uncle: Liz Metcalf (Spencer, OK), Hazel Metcalf, Bernice Metcalf and Gloria (Nelson) Wallace of Tulsa. In addition, his legacy includes a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces, great-great nephews, other relatives, many friends, and especially his Timothy Baptist Church Family.

We are grateful for the richness of JB’s life, the kindness of his heart and the love of family, We will truly miss him!

Funeral Services for Dr. J.B. Patterson, Jr. 71 Senior Pastor, Timothy Baptist Church of Tulsa, Oklahoma will be at 2:00PM, Saturday October 19, 2019. Gethsemane Baptist Church 727 East 56th Street North Tulsa, Oklahoma 74126.

Burial will be on Monday October 21, 2019, Fort Gibson National Cemetery, Fort Gibson, Oklahoma with Military Honors. Visitation will be Friday October 18, 2019 3:00PM til 8:00PM at Butler-Stumpff & Dyer Funeral Home. Memorial Services will be 7:00PM, Friday at Timothy Baptist Church, 821 East 46th Street North Tulsa, Oklahoma 74126.
