Obituary
Reflections of the life of Rev. Hughes
He would often say, “I am 91 on this side of the stars.” All his family preceded him in death. He was the youngest son of George and Mary Hughes. After a call to the ministry, he was assistant pastor at Blackjack Baptist Church and later pastor at New Hope Baptist Church in Bristow, Oklahoma. His later years he was an active member of Alsuma Baptist Church in Tulsa. He loved music and sang tenor with the Hughes brothers’ quartet. They sang at local churches and were one of the feature groups at the BOK in Tulsa. In his younger years, he loved to hunt and fish local ponds.
He loved God and people. In later years, he would sit and visit with his neighbors and always be willing to lend a helping hand. He loved to cook and at Christmas time would bake sweet potato pies for friends in the neighborhood. He is survived by his wife Bessie of 13 years and her sons Thomas and Chris. He had two children Darlene and Darnell (Donna) who are children by Maline his wife of 36 years who preceded him in death. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Uncle Darnell always had a good word of encouragement for me growing up. His brother Harvey and Wilhelmina were my babysitters growing up. I remember Uncle Darnell coming by sometimes and making me laugh because I was telling him I was strong enough to tend to the animals and do the gardening LOL. Praying for the family
