Reflections… Dona Marie Sampson

For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day–and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:6-8

On July 30, 1944 a beautiful baby girl was born to Erma Jean “Sweetie” Scales and Dewitt Driver in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. She was affectionately named, Dona Marie.

Dona received her formal education from the Sapulpa Public Schools lastly attending Booker T. Washington High School in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. She later relocated to California, before returning to Oklahoma and making Tulsa her home. She was employed with Dyer Memorial Chapel and Lloyd E. Rader Center. After retirement, she moved to Kansas City, Mo. And was employed with Lawrence A. Jones and Sons Funeral Chapel and with Eley and Sons Funeral Chapel. In 2008, she earned an Associates Degree of Applied Science in Mortuary Science.

Dona accepted Christ at an early age and was a dedicated Christian. Her faith and love for Christ led her to always find a church home wherever she resided. She was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church, Kansas City, Missouri.

On July 19, 2017, Dona Marie dozed in eternity to a place of “No More” Meeting her at Heaven’s Gate will gladly be her mother, Erma Jean “Sweetie” Scales, her father, Dewitt Driver and her adopted father, A.C. Dyer her two husbands, Theodore Harper and Billy Sampson.

Dona leaves to cherish her precious memories, her only son, James Earl “Cheese” Broom Jr. of Tulsa, Oklahoma; a granddaughter, Lacretia “Christy” Broom of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two- great-grandsons, CriShawn Mayberry and Nicholas Broom of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Her mother, Sharon Dyer of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Five brothers, Melvin Driver, Donald Ray Brown, Lawrence Dyer, Martin Dyer and Sam Dyer all of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Three sisters, Regina Jackson of California, Sherri Bailey of Cedar Hill, Texas and Sherice Speakman of Lithonia, Georgia along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and dear friends. Dona also leaves a legacy of love, warm, funny and crazy memories. She will forever be missed by many.

The Last Request Please don’t say I gave up, just say that I gave in, Don’t Say I lost the battle, for it was God’s war to lose or win; Please don’t say how good I was, but say I did my best. Just say I tried to do what’s right, to give the most I could, not less; Please don’t give me wings or halos, that’s for God to do; I want no more than I deserve, no extra, just my due. Please don’t give me flowers or talk in real hushed tones. Don’t be concerned about me now, I’m well with God, I’ve made it home. Don’t talk about my illness, it’s over and it’s done. Just see to all my family’s needs. Especially the little ones. When you draw a picture of me, don’t draw me a saint. I’ve done some good, I’ve done some wrong, So use all the colors you can paint. Not just the bright and light tones, use some gray and dark; In fact don’t put me down on canvas, paint me in your heart. Remember all the good times remember all the bad; For life is full of many things, some happy and some sad But if you must do something, then I have one request. Forgive me for any wrong I’ve done, and with the love that’s left, Thank God of my soul’s resting, thank God for I’ve been blessed, Thank God for all who loved me, praise God who loves me best!
